Technical communicators in India: on the move

I've traveled just enough to know that in few, if any, countries will you see the national flag on display as much as it is in the U.S. Still, after two days in Bangalore, I'm surprised that I've seen the Indian flag flying in only one place: on a makeshift pole atop a small apartment building outside my hotel window.

India's flag is distinctive, featuring a wheel that symbolizes three aspects of the national character: self-reliance (the wheel was originally meant to represent a spinning wheel), duty and propriety as embodied in the law of dharma, and movement.1

I'm guessing that my neighbor across the way is proud of these character traits and wants everyone to know.

The last of the three -- movement -- certainly sums up a lot of what I've seen so far in India. On the street, everything is constantly moving. It's moving at different paces and in different directions, but it's moving. And somehow it all works: people are getting where they need to go, in one piece. Movement, or more precisely progress, also describes the many new buildings and office parks that house pretty much all of the world's great technology companies.

Amid this progress, and certainly part of this progress, are India's technical communicators. I've met a good many of them through social networking and now I'm starting to meet them in person. I'm also proud to say that SDI is rapidly building its business in Bangalore.

The STC India Summit, which starts tomorrow, has a full program of workshops and presentations. The India chapter, and the people who comprise it, are definitely on the move.

1 No, I didn't know all of this already. I found it on Wikipedia. Got the picture there too.
