Configuration Options

Author-it is usually deployed in a client-server configuration, as shown in Author-it Server. In this scenario, the Author-it library (database) and publishing templates reside on a server, and Author-it program components and publishing directories are on each client PC.

In a wide area network environment that includes remote users, this setup may need to be enhanced to support remote users. The following approaches can be used to provide support for remote users:

• Remote users can access content from the main library using the Offline Authoring capability as described in Using Author-it in a Distributed Environment.
• Use Author-it Live to provide access to a library on a server through a web browser.
• All users can access Author-it running on an application server as described in Setting up Author-it using an Application Server.

The key factor in determining whether one of these solutions is needed is the network latency for accessing the Author-it library from the work locations that need to be supported. To determine network latency issues, it is helpful to evaluate the response time to the server and run a trace for operations such as publishing (English and translation content), importing content, and creating localization libraries.
